Chaves repeals anti-discrimination decree and eliminates LGBTI commissioner.
2025 January 29
President Rodrigo Chaves announced the repeal of Executive Decree 38.999, the "Executive Policy to eradicate discrimination toward the LGBTI population from its institutions", and the elimination of the dedicated LGBTQ commissioner that had been established by former president Carlos Alvarado.
The Presidential Social Council would absorb these duties into a generic "vulnerability" portfolio, alongside disability and ethnicity issues. When questioned about the decision, Chaves stated: "Why should only they have a commissioner?"
The decree had been in place since 2015 and was designed to establish a policy within the Executive Branch to eliminate discrimination against the LGBTI population in public institutions.
